The Cinderella run for rising tennis star Victoria Mboko came to a perfect conclusion, as the Canadian delighted home fans by toppling former World No.1 Naomi Osaka to lift the Canadian Open title.
The 18-year old shook off an opening set loss to battle back and upset the Japanese superstar, recording a 2-6 6-4 6-1 victory. Mboko dropped to the ground in disbelief as Osaka's final shot crashed into the net, sending the Montreal crowd into rapturous applause.
The first set saw Osaka dominate from the baseline, relying on her experience and powerful groundstrokes to dictate play. However, Mboko appeared to overcome any jitters as the match progressed, matching Osaka's pace and surprising the four-time Grand Slam champion with precision that belied her youth.
After splitting the first two sets, momentum swung in Mboko's favor. The Canadian was firing on all cylinders, while an increasingly frustrated Osaka began to commit more errors.

As the final set progressed, it became evident Osaka had lost her rhythm. The two-time US Open champion showed impatience during rallies, sending balls long or into the net. Osaka appeared visibly frustrated, to the point where she seemed to give up on a point, which Mboko somehow got to and hit a winner down the line.
With the crowd cheering their local hero on, it was only a matter of time as Mboko raced through the final set to secure victory. The World No.85 dropped her racket in disbelief as Osaka committed her final error of the match, before flashing her trademark smile at her box as realization set in.
The 18-year old overcame several former Grand Slam champions to achieve this victory. In addition to defeating Osaka, Mboko fought past former Wimbledon Champion Elena Rybakina in a nail-biting three-set semifinal. Furthermore, the youngster defeated top seed and reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff in the round of 16, a few days after defeating 2021 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the opening round.
With her top 50 breakthrough guaranteed after her win in Montreal, Mboko will have momentum riding on her side as she battles to be seeded at the 2025 US Open.
