A bizarre moment unfolded during the Rio Open quarterfinal between Alexander Zverev and Francisco Comesaña when a drone flew over the court, disrupting play. The world No. 2 attempted to strike it down with a shot, creating an unusual scene in Brazil.

The three-time Grand Slam finalist was stunned by Argentina’s Comesaña, losing 6-4, 3-6, 4-6. Zverev had led 3-0 in the third set but was ultimately unable to hold off his South American opponent’s comeback. This loss marked the end of his Golden Swing campaign in South America, where he recorded three wins and two defeats.

Zverev expressed his frustration over the drone interruption, which he felt disrupted his focus and contributed to an upset loss—similar to his early exit at the Argentina Open against Francisco Cerúndolo. "I think I played at a better level than in Buenos Aires, but it's a shame to end the tournament this way," he said.

"Nevertheless, I've enjoyed my time here in Rio, and I hope to be back. This is one of the best ATP 500 tournaments I've ever been lucky enough to take part in," he added. "It's just unfortunate to lose in this way, especially as I was in a favourable position to win this match."

The world No. 2 now turns his attention to Indian Wells, where he will be the top seed following Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension. The German is set to defend the points he earned last year after reaching the quarterfinals, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
