Anna Kalinskaya saw the mental toll of her defeat to
Iga Swiatek at the
US Open get to her on Saturday evening as a video was released of the Russian in tears after getting so close to an upset win.
Kalinskaya raced away into a 5-1 first set lead at the
US Open and also had four set points but couldn't capitalize on any of them allowing Swiatek firmly back into the contest. Swiatek went on to win the set 7-6(2) after being down 5-1 as Kalinskaya just couldn't find a way through in what can be perceived as a bit of a continued mental roadblock.
Swiatek went on to win the second set 6-4 to seal the win and obviously the first set and the toll that it took got to Kalinskaya who was seen walking away from Arthur Ashe Stadium in tears likely knowing that a big chance to seal the win certainly got away.
But for Kalinskaya it is not just these types of games, she doesn't have a title yet in her career and missed a chance in particular to win the Washington title recently so is very much on the so near but yet so far wave. Swiatek now moves on to face off against Ekaterina Alexandrova for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
Swiatek herself was even shocked about how she won. “Oh, my God, I don’t know,” Swiatek said after the match. “Honestly, Anna was playing great. She was getting all these risky balls in like she once did against me in Dubai. So, I just wanted to make less mistakes, because I felt like I was playing well.
“I felt like I had nothing to lose because I was losing pretty badly. So, at the end (of the first set) I just went for it, because what more can I do?"
