Marta Kostyuk fell to Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday night at the 2025 Madrid Open and given the incident that took place during the tie will feel aggrieved as Aryna Sabalenka attempted to force a halt in play mid serve due to the rain.
The rain began as sudden death got underway. She was serving at 4-5 in the tiebreak. She missed her first serve then asked the umpire about the rain.
But the umpire didn't think it was the time to stop it. “I don’t think it’s that bad yet to stop. We can still play a bit.”
Sabalenka walked back to hit a second serve but stopped and refused to play because of the weather. Kostyuk rightfully got upset because Sabalenka would get another first serve on return.
“How is this possible? Why is it first serve again? She stopped by herself. Nobody stopped her.”
Play resumed once the roof had closed and Kostyuk won the next point and got two set points but Sabalenka went on to save three in total. Sabalenka made no mistake with her opportunity to claim the win and edged into the final four. She now faces another Ukrainian in Elina Svitolina.
