Laura Siegemund returns during Australian Open.
Two of the most fiery stars on the WTA circuit faced off and came to blow accidentally during their doubles clash as Laura Siegemund was hit in the face by Jelena Ostapenko as the the former French Open champion's shot left Siegemund red faced.
Ostapenko was partnering with the iconic Hsieh Su-wei in the women's doubles at the Australian Open. The pairing won their opening match before getting an easy pass as Anastasia Potapova and Olga Danilovic withdrew from the clash ahead of time which gave the Latvian and Taiwanese star more time to recover.
On Monday they faced Laura Siegemund who lost to Maddison Inglis in singles who went on to be defeated in the fourth round in a surprise run against Iga Swiatek. As well as former singles champion Sofia Kenin. Ostapenko and Su-Wei were well in control breaking their opponents twice in the first set. In the second, they were running away with it until the seventh game of the match.
Ostapenko at 6-3, 5-1 up charged close to the net and with a powerful two-handed backhand shot which was straight to the body of the German. She was quick to react keeping the ball in play by hitting an awkward forehand shot.
Ostapenko then followed up with another fierce backhand shit, this time it struck Siegemund in the face. The force of the shot knocked her to the court while the racquet slipped out of her hands. After a few seconds, she rose to her feet. Kenin rushed to help her while Ostapenko issued an apology.
Ostapenko and Su-Wei went on to win 6-3, 6-2. They would have been expecting a repeat of their match against Townsend and Siniakova from the final last year but Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic thwarted them.
