Iga Swiatek was left fighting back tears as she was defeated easily by Coco Gauff at the Madrid Open on Thursday afternoon 6-1, 6-1 with the American recording a third straight win over her former unbeatable rival.
Swiatek though has lost their last three at the United Cup, WTA Finals and now Madrid Open. The latter the most damning given that she is at home the most on the clay and has dominated this title over the years.
But there seems to be an issue that needs resolving for Swiatek who has gone from being the imperious World No.1 to having serious problems. She has been ousted in recent weeks again by Jelena Ostapenko, Alexandra Eala in Miami and Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells.
Gauff has not been in remarkable form but was exquisite today and Swiatek was spotted on her bench after going 6-1, 3-0 down fighting back the tears under her towel as the emotion seemed to overcome her.
Casper Ruud though who won himself today put a classy spin on the matter calling her an inspiration and not to get down on herself. Hey @iga_swiatek keep your head up Like millions of other people I love watching you play. Not your day today, but you inspire so many and you’ll be back stronger than ever!!
