Marketa Vondrousova defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-1 to advance to the Olympic Games final where she will face Belinda Bencic.
Elina Svitolina was the last remaining top 10 player in the draw but as of today she too is out of the event. The Ukrainian player played some great tennis to reach the medal round but today she simply did not have it against a very solid Vondrousova. The Czech player prepared well for her opponent and it showed.
She mixed her game up keeping Svitolina off-balance never allowing her to find her rhythm. The Ukrainian player also seemed fatigued especially in the 2nd set when Vondrousova resorted to drop shots even more. Svitolina tried to attack Vondrousova but the Czech player covered the court well.
She returned most balls over the net and rarely if ever made mistakes and gave away free points. Svitolina tried to overcompensate by hitting harder but that resulted in many errors (29) in total. In the end, Vondrousova was able to close out the 2nd set and match with 6-1.
A terrible performance by Svitolina who once again faltered on the big stage. She still has a chance to win a medal and she will play against Rybakina for it. How much motivation will there be left remains to be seen but Vondrousova deserved to move on.
