Ashleigh Barty will compete for a medal in Tokyo after all after she and Peers bested Tsitsipas and Sakkari in the mixed doubles event 6-4 4-6 10-6.
It was a disappointing start for Ashleigh Barty at the
Olympic Games as the Australian crashed out early after a very shaky performance. However, she was able to bounce back in the doubles with Peers and they will compete for a medal. The Australian duo is one of the favourites as both players have extensive doubles experience.
Today they faced a tricky team in Tsitsipas and Sakkari who are capable of doubles brilliance. The first set was a very close one but Sakkari had a very bad service game late in the set that ended with her double fault. However, the Greeks fought back in the 2nd taking an early break.
They held it rather easily throughout the set encountering some issues in the final game of the set but Tsitsipas was able to pull it out with his serve. The match tiebreak was an interesting one where Team Australia exploited the Greek's weaknesses.
Sakkari was targeted on her serve which once again was not great while Tsitsipas had struggle controlling serves with his backhand return. The better net play from Team Australia proved key as well and they move on to the medal round.
