Pablo Carreno Busta arrived in Tokyo after winning the biggest trophy of his career at the Hamburg European Open and that great form continued in Tokyo. His next victim was Daniil Medvedev who will finally leave Tokyo after being at odds with everything there since arriving.
Despite not playing in the sun Medvedev still struggled at the Olympics losing the opening set 2-6 to Carreno Busta. The Russian did not play too bad but he could not get his first serve in. Whenever he did he won the point with ease but as the rallies developed Carreno Busta had more chances.
He would use two of the 5 break points he had to win the opening set 6-2. Medvedev upped his service percentage in the 2nd set and that yielded results. He took an early break which he held for a few games but Carreno pounced and the first chance he had to tie it.
In the end, we ended up in the tiebreak where Carreno Busta simply outplayed Medvedev. He played well the entirety of the 2nd half of the 2nd set posting a positive winner to error ratio which proved enough. His serve which was more than solid helped as well.
