2022 Roland Garros finalist, Coco Gauff amid Rafael Nadal taking to the court at the French Open wasted no time at all as she cleared the first hurdle of her campaign thrashing Julia Avdeeva 6-1, 6-1 under the roof on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
After Jannik Sinner had won, it was Gauff's time to shine and as ever with the American in the early rounds, it is a blink and you miss it affair. She usually breezes through with relative ease and at times even dodges rain delays in other tournaments due to how quickly she wins.
Gauff's victory was also very much notable as it was her 50th main draw Grand Slam win of her career and she is the ninth of all time from the US to reach that milestone before the age of 21.
She needed only 52 minutes in total to defeat the World No.208 in a match played under the roof of the second stadium which is being used for the first time this week. But Gauff played as if they were going to have to go off for rain due to the speed of which she went about her business.
Avdeeva struggled for consistency in the tie making 23 unforced errors with Gauff forcing another 20 off her racquet. She is now 16-3 in first round Grand Slam matches and 5-0 at Roland Garros. Consistency personified.
Leylah Fernandez was even more emphatic against wildcard Jessika Ponchet. The former US Open finalist who has been known in the past as 'Clay-lah' has previously played superb on the surface. But has not really shown it this season thus far.
She was in no mood either to mess around either after rain delays have disrupted most of the afternoon. She thrashed Ponchet 6-2, 6-0 in just over an hour to win emphatically. Next up for her is Xiyu Wang with Ons Jabeur likely lurking in the third round. It opens up for Fernandez with a potential second week against a slew of names in little form.
