Although their shiny days are already gone for some time, the 2014 Australian champion, Stan Wawrinka and 2017 Roland Garros champion, Jelena Ostapenko will be looking to add their next Grand Slam title in Melbourne.
In the first round, Wawrinka defeated Dzumhur 3-1. In the men's part of the draw, he was joined by Carreno-Busta who also recorded a 4-set victory over Kovalik. Ernest Gulbis stunned Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets and Marc Polmans made home fans happy with a 3-2 victory over Mikhail Kukushkin.
Filip Krajinovic and Quentin Halys fought in a four-hour match. Krajinovic was more successful in the end when he managed to win the fifth set 7-5. Also, the match between James Duckworth and Aljaz Bedene was decided in 5 sets. The Slovenian triumphed after nearly 4 hours. On the other hand, Ymer, Mmoh, Verdasco and Thompson all advanced after comfortable 3-0 victories following first-seeded Rafael Nadal into the 2nd round.
In the women's part, we've seen a lot of action again. Ostapenko triumphed over Samsonova in two sets. She was followed by Tomljanovic, Davis, and Giorgi who also added 2-set victories. Minnen, Diyas, and Muguruza needed 3 sets to advance. And the match between Shelby Rogers and Garbine Muguruza was the special one. Muguruza lost the first set 0-6, to come back and win the other two 6-1 and 6-0.
