Team Europe
captain
Bjorn Borg lamented his team's tough loss at the
Laver Cup.
The first
four editions of the tournament, spearheaded by Roger Federer, were won by Team
Europe, which typically entered the Laver Cup as the favorite. However, this
time, with the absence of past tennis giants like Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak
Djokovic, or Andy Murray
This time Team
World secured the title for the second consecutive year with a commanding score
of 13-2, without needing to play the last three points of the series and only
conceding one of the nine matches played. The only player who cames with a victory
was Casper Ruud over Tommy Paul by 7-6(6), 6-2.
Team Europe
captain Bjorn Borg was surprised by the outstanding level of the opposing team
and lamented his team's defeat, which included players such as Andrey Rublev,
Casper Ruud, Gael Monfils and Hubert Hurkacz:
“It’s been
a good week for us, practicing and getting together, the team spirit,
everything. I mean, we gave 100%,” former world No. 1 said
“Of course
we are all very disappointed, because we never expect to lose this score this
much. What can you say? They played good tennis.”
“I think
everybody played good tennis here,” Borg added. “We did. But unfortunately we
did not win the key points, and we lose a lot of important points in the
matches.”
“Could it
have gone the other round, maybe it would be a different score. I’m happy with
my team. I mean, I’m happy with these guys. They took a lot of responsibility
to do what they have to do. They gave 100%, all these guys. It’s no complaints
in that kind of way,” claimed Borg
“Sometimes
you need to admit the opponent was a little bit better”
“One thing.
We will definitely bring back the Cup. It’s going to stay in Europe next year,”
Borg concluded.
