Olga Danilovic surged into life in 2024 and 2025, becoming a real dangerous player and reaching the top 32 in the world last year, but she suddenly fell away and has not played on tour since February 2026. But that is for a very good and heartwarming reason.
Danilovic reached the fourth round of the Australian Open last year, the same as in the French Open the year before, and is a two-time singles title winner on the WTA Tour.
She won the 2018 Moscow River Cup and then returned to prominence a few years later, winning in Guangzhou in 2024 against Caroline Dolehide and then falling last April to Elina Svitolina in Rouen.
But after the Australian Open in January beating Venus Williams, she basically put her career on hold. She has not played since the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca in February; she soon after announced that she was set to become a mother for the first time.
Her pregnancy has led to a long absence from the tour, and she gave birth yesterday to a baby boy called Maksim, as per multiple outlets back home in Serbia. That absence had naturally had a big impact on her ranking, as she went from World No. 32 to being ranked 390.
But when she does decide to return to the tour, it will be made easier. She will benefit from a protected ranking, a system that allows players returning after pregnancy to use the ranking in a maximum of 12 tournaments over a three-year period. So in theory, unlike other returnees in the past, she should be able to take it easier when she does return and will be able to return to her previous high ranking and get into events.

Her fiance is also a famous sportsperson in a completely different sport. Jan Oblak is the Slovenian goalkeeper for Atletico Madrid. The 33-year-old has made over 400 appearances for the top European side since making his debut in 2014 and has been playing just this week, so unlike Danilovic, he has still been doing his day job waiting for the new arrival.
They have been together since 2023 and got engaged last June before her pregnancy was revealed a few days later so there was a double hit of good news, and now Danilovic will look to spend some time being a new mother before potentially returning if she does towards the new year.
