World No.3 Jessica Pegula bizarrely bundled out of Wimbledon after poor display

Jessica Pegula came into this Wimbledon as a key protagonist after winning Bad Homburg. But prior to that came the poor losses and it was another to begin Day Two as she lost easily to Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Pegula has had a knack of not following her usual consistency pattern suffering shock losses when she would only previously fall to the top names.

Moyuka Uchijima and Lois Boisson on the clay recently proved that and she has lost today to Cocciaretto who she was widely expected to beat comfortably.

In the end it was 6-2, 6-3 for the Italian as a big gap now opens in the draw with Pegula’s early demise. Not playing most of this part of the season last year somewhat saves her but going into an important US swing, she will need answers.

Katie Volynets or Tatjana Maria likely await her now. It also directly benefits Iga Swatek who starts her campaign today and sits in that section.

"I was so pumped to play Wimbledon this year," Cocciaretto said in her on-court interview. "I couldn't wait until the match started, I was practicing so hard."

It is also redemption for last year when she was pumped up and couldn't play due to illness. "I was playing Birmingham," she said. "The day of quarterfinals, when I won against [Diana] Shnaider, I was really sick in the night, like sweating a lot and feeling really bad. I had a lot of fever."

"I was supposed to play against [Maria] Sakkari first round," Cocciaretto said. "I withdraw because I couldn't walk. I couldn't wake up from the bed. I stayed five or six days with 39, 40 degrees of fever. I took antibiotics and everything. But the thing is that I was sleeping, like, 15 hours a day.
