WTA CEO Steve Simon called Wimbledon's actions "extremely disappointing" and promised them they will see some "strong reaction" for breaking tennis laws.

On Wednesday, Wimbledon announced Russian and Belarusian players have been banned from competing at The Championships this year. Shortly after the Wimbledon announcement, the LTA announced Russian and Belarusian players won't be allowed to compete in British events during the grass season. Speaking in the Tennis Podcast, WTA Chief Steve Simon said:

“People take the position that sports and politics shouldn’t match and shouldn’t be intertwined, but that’s not the reality. At times sports does cross into politics and here is a situation where politics is crossing into sports. It is real life."

He further said:

“The announcement that came out was extremely disappointing, to say the least. The one thing that this sport has always agreed upon, we don’t agree on a lot of things, but the one thing we have always been united on was that entry into our events – ITF, ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, it doesn’t matter – has always been based up on merit and without discrimination."

He finished off with:

“The Wimbledon decision is against the Grand Slam rules as well as the Grand Slam agreement that we have. The LTA, which has WTA sanctioned events, the decision is in violation of the WTA bylaws and rules with respect to entry of athletes. So we do have the ability to react to both of those. We don’t have the same jurisdiction over the Grand Slams as we do our own sanctioned events. We have precedents where these situations may have occurred where fines and tournament sanctions have been imposed. So we will be evaluating how we proceed. I do think you’ll see some strong reactions that will come from us but what those are and how far they’ll go is still to be determined”.

Thousands of Ukrainian teachers, nurses, sports people, people of all kinds are being forced to pick up guns and go and fight to protect their country against Russia. The very least we can do is to block Russia in every way possible. Every cultural, sporting, economic, financial avenue we can take and block Russia. We should be doing that right now without question.

At last a clear voice of reason! The tragedy is that most NATO and EU member states know that they will get away wirh any and everything. This decision is the result of a political gang-up against Russia. It dates back from the previous century when the US wanted to make sure that Russia would never be in a position to compete with them on a military, economic, scientific and other levels. They kept NATO going and extended membership to a lot of other countries. Now we can see the result of that strategy. Add to it the role of the mainstream media and their propaganda, and Russia will always find it difficult, even impossuble, to get a fair deal. The US knows it and also that other countries will support them, no matter what - for obvious reasons of course. They are now using that power to bully any country who doesn't follow their lead. What an absolute disgrace!! The sporting world is much more poorer as a result of this. To claim victory without Russian participants in different sporting codes will mean nothing in my opinion. We need more voices of reason like this one to make sure that the world can work towards peace instead of escalating the situation. I haven't seen any US (or any other country for that matter) sportsman/woman who were banned to participate in sporting events when they unlawfully invaded Iraq, killing a million plus innocent people in the process. Double standards in the extreme but this is how it is and that's why the world is in such a mess in many aspects. The power greedy politicians and so called leaders must rather leave sport to the sporting fraternity to take decisions which is in the interest of sport.
