The second week of WTA
Miami Open action is set to take place in Florida, with the last-16 set to commence. There have already been several highly-noted exits as players sense an opportunity to strike and capitalise. With a whole heap of points on offer in the WTA 1000 event, movement in the rankings is common as players jostle for positions.
Swiatek losing touch at the top
Last year's champion,
Aryna Sabalenka, will lose points unless she wins the title. Currently on course to lose 880 points, her gap at the top is still a massive one, which no one looks to be getting close to anytime soon.
If someone would, then
Elena Rybakina would be the favourite to. Her position in second is secured thanks to the results further down the order. Unlike Sabalenka, she is set to gain a lot of points thanks to an early exit in last year's event. A golden opportunity to close the gap at the top heading into the clay swing.
Iga Swiatek's mind will already be on clay, but instead of looking ahead she may be peering over her shoulder as another drop in the rankings could be coming. Her second round defeat means 150 have come off leaving her vulnerable from behind. From the trio of Americans who trail her, only Coco Gauff in fourth can overtake her at this tournament, but that is only if she wins it. Both her and Amanda Anisimova have matched their run from last year and have space to build on. It is damage limitation for Pegula who is currently 530 points down. Last year's runner-up will be confident in recouping most of those points thanks to her current form.
Unlike Swiatek, no danger threatens her. Elina Svitolina and Jasmine Paolini both exited the tournament at the third round stage. Svitolina does gain a place over the Italian, rising into seventh. A slim opportunity for Victoria Mboko and Mirra Andreeva to make more ground could be on the cards. The title would see either of them leapfrog Svitolina and Paolini. However, their next match is against each other.
Victoria Mboko could rise to world number seven if she wins the Miami Open title
Damage limitation for Eala as Gibson's dream rise continues
Ekaterina Alexandrova will not budge the top 10 after her last-64 defeat. Belinda Bencic and Karolina Muchova are the only other players in the top 20 still in contention. A win for Bencic will move her into 11th while Muchova looks to snatch back the Czech number one spot from Indian Wells semi-finalist Linda Noskova.
Iva Jovic debuts in the top 16 for the first time despite her short stay in Florida. Diana Shnaider and Ludmilla Samsonova both climb a place into 19th and 21st respectively.
Jelena Ostapenko in 23rd next highest rankeed player to still be competing. Already up 110 points, she is a couple of wins away from barraging herself back into the top 20. A last-32 exit for Marie Bouzkova sees her rise five places to 27th, just one place behind Emma Raducanu who was not involved due to illness picked up in the Middle East swing. 185 points have been deducted after her quarterfinal run in 2025.
Sorana Cirstea and Qinwen Zheng complete the top 30. Both players are still involved but with different trajectories. 85 points added on the tally means Cirstea has risen six places back into the top 30 while a four place drop for Zheng leaves her narrowly inside.
After a surprising win over Svitolina, Hailey Baptiste is closing in on a return to the top 40. Four places have already been gained as she currently sits in 41st. Another win and she will be in a career high 37th in the world. It is a different story for
Alexandra Eala who, for the time being, is in 45th. She has limited the damage of that semi-final run last year to 16 places but unless she finds a way past Muchova, 270 points will come tumbling off her ranking come next week.
Talia Gibson's incredible rise continues. The lowest ranked player left in the tournament, the Aussie is coming off the back of a quarterfinal appearance at Indian Wells. It is the dream Sunshine double for Gibson, who began Indian Wells outside of the top 100. After qualifying for the Miami Open and reaching the last-16, she is now in a career-high of world number 56, jumping up 12 places. If she somehow defeats Rybakina, a top 50 debut will occur in one of the stories of 2026.
