Elena Rybakina extended her lead in the
WTA Race to the Finals after another week of competition on the Asian swing, moving closer to securing the year-end No. 1 ranking. The Kazakh captured the
Ningbo Open title, defeating
Leylah Fernandez in the final to strengthen her position at the top of the standings ahead of the season-ending championships.
There were no major changes near the top of the Race, with the leading players turning their attention to the WTA Finals. The
eight qualifiers have been determined after Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk
ended their seasons, leaving no realistic opportunity for other contenders to secure a last-minute place in the field.
The top 10 is largely settled heading into the final stretch of the season, although the WTA Finals could still influence the final year-end rankings. Rybakina's latest title increased her advantage over world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka to 1,450 points, putting her within reach of finishing the year
at the top of the rankings.
Further down the standings, several players made the most of the latest tournaments to strengthen their positions. Fernandez continued her push to finish inside the year-end top 20, while Iva Jovic and Diana Shnaider looked to close the gap on the top 10. Meanwhile,
Katie Boulter and Katerina Siniakova climbed into the top 50 of the Race, giving themselves a timely boost before the season concludes.
Rybakina strengthens her position
The Asian swing offered limited opportunities to change the composition of the WTA Finals field, with most of the leading players having secured qualification weeks earlier. Swiatek and Kostyuk remained among the few players with a mathematical chance of making a late push, but their respective decisions to end their seasons helped simplify the qualification picture. Karolina Muchova ultimately secured the final spot among the eight qualifiers.
Following the latest tournaments in Ningbo and Osaka, Rybakina was the only top-10 player to add significant points to her Race total. Her Ningbo triumph increased her advantage over Sabalenka to 1,450 points, leaving her just one victory away from mathematically securing the year-end No. 1 position, depending on the remaining scenarios.
Behind the leading pair, the other WTA Finals qualifiers include Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Elina Svitolina, and Czech players Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova. Swiatek and Kostyuk round out the top 10 in ninth and 10th place, respectively, although their final year-end ranking positions will depend on the results of the remaining competition and the Finals.
Rybakina is in a commanding position to finish the season as world No. 1, barring an unexpected turn of events. The battle for the remaining positions near the top of the rankings, however, could remain competitive throughout the WTA Finals. The round-robin format gives players multiple opportunities to earn points, with each qualifier guaranteed at least three matches if they complete the group stage.
Jovic and Shnaider target top 10
The WTA Race determines not only qualification for the season-ending championships but also provides an indication of the final year-end rankings. Swiatek and Kostyuk have built a substantial enough advantage over the players behind them to remain firmly positioned inside the top 10, but the final tournaments still offer opportunities for other contenders to reduce the gap.
Jovic made progress in Ningbo, reaching the quarterfinals and moving to within 1,000 points of the top 10. The American has established herself as a player to watch heading into 2027, when breaking into that group could become a major objective.
However, she will also face a demanding start to the new season, having points to defend after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and winning the Brisbane title earlier in the year. Adding points during the closing weeks of the current campaign could help limit the impact of those upcoming ranking deductions.
Shnaider also enjoyed a strong week in Ningbo, reaching the semifinals and moving into No. 13 in the Race. Like Jovic, the Russian will be looking to challenge for a place in the top 10 in 2027, with both players aiming to take another step forward in their careers.
Fernandez, meanwhile, used her run to the Ningbo final to strengthen her position in the Race. Although she finished runner-up to Rybakina, the Canadian collected 300 points, moving up to No. 22 and closer to the year-end top 20. The upcoming Tokyo tournament offers her another opportunity to achieve that goal, which would represent a new milestone in her career. Even after reaching the US Open final in 2021, Fernandez has never finished a season inside the top 20.
Siniakova and Boulter break into the Race top 50
Away from the spotlight surrounding the Ningbo final, Katerina Siniakova enjoyed a significant week in Osaka. The Czech captured the sixth singles title of her career and her first in three years, adding another achievement to a career in which she has reached 11 singles finals. Six of those finals have come during the Asian swing, where she has now won three of her six career titles.
The Osaka triumph also helped Siniakova return to the top 50 of the WTA Race after an inconsistent season in singles. Her position as one of the leading doubles players remains firmly established, but the latest result provided a valuable reminder of her ability to compete for singles titles as well.
Katie Boulter also made progress after reaching the Osaka final. The Brit is just one point ahead of Siniakova in the Race, moving into No. 45 and breaking into the top 50 shortly before the end of the season. The result strengthened her position as the leading British player and gave her another opportunity to finish the year on a positive note.
Boulter could now be in line to finish the season as Britain's No. 1 for the third time. With Sonay Kartal - who reached the Wuhan final - having already ended her campaign, Boulter has an advantage in the race to finish the year as the highest-ranked British woman.
