WTA Rankings Update: Maja Chwalinska makes mammoth rise towards top 10 after Wuhan title with Sonay Kartal rises 120 spots in one week
WTA
The WTA Rankings have been updated after a big week on the women's tour, with Maja Chwalinska showing that her run at Roland Garros was not a flash in the pan as she surges towards the top 10 after winning the title in Wuhan.
On a completely different surface too in this case, as Chwalinska shone, and this has had huge consequences. In the top 10, there were no changes despite Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, and others losing early. But Chwalinska has jumped 11 spots, and the queue for the top 10 at that.
Iva Jovic seemed the next likely candidate for a top 10 debut after a terrific season for the 18-year-old, but she has been jumped by Chwalinska, albeit it will take some running for her to make the top 10 yet at least and then further head into it. Chwalinska is on 3,031 points. But it sits around 800 points behind Marta Kostyuk, meaning that it is likely Chwalinska has to win another title to make her debut or a player has to drop off ahead of her.
But feasibly we could be looking at a situation where, given Swiatek is ninth, we could get a new Polish number one in the next few months. Very much unheralded, given that Chwalinska up until Roland Garros languished outside the top 100.

Sonay Kartal the star of this week.
But in a similar vein to others before her, such as Amanda Anisimova, she has put it together this season, and while the backing it up next year now as a result is a different scenario, for now she has emerged as one of the best on the tour in terms of a stark rise over the course of the year.
Kartal one of the biggest rises as Andreescu and Stephens rise again
However, not only was there the great story with Chwalinska, but also Sonay Kartal rose again. The Brit has been an unfortunate injury casualty for most of the past year after showing such promise at Wimbledon on home soil. But now she is back in the higher echelons after only returning in recent weeks.
She has gone a staggering 120 spots to return to the top 50. Other rises include Jelena Ostapenko up 10 to the 24th and Ann Li after her run-up six to the 25th.

Outside of the bubble of the Asian hard court swing, former US Open champions also won titles, with Bianca Andreescu and Sloane Stephens succeeding.
Andreescu won the Rovereto Open Città della Pace WTA 125 in Italy. She climbs to World No. 132, up 36 spots, her highest position since April. While in Edmond, Oklahoma, Sloane Stephens beat the prodigious 16-year-old Kristina Liutova to win the ITF W100 title. Her first overall since Rouen in 2024. She rises to World No. 118, up 15 spots, after being out of the top 1000 to start the year.

- Vukov is doing this to Lena... AGAIN!!!!! WTA's autonomous collective should be dismantled for allowing Vukov to re-emerge from his hand-slapping suspension. Just ask WTA employees how that's been going lately as they witness his continued verbal abuses. Women's Pro Tennis should start over.
mandoist08-11-2026 - Can't help but suspect Vukov is back to his old self again. Thank you, WTA. Perhaps you can give them a "Battling Couple of the Year Award 2026" ??
mandoist08-11-2026 - Wtf? Why is there no reason? And what about the men's?Bel08-11-2026
- One step by another step -- WTA continues to 'lose the plot'. Too many hi-tech microphones being installed at most venues!!! Remove them (especially those along the hallways, sidewalks, and pathways throughout the venues. Not to mention (most of all) remove the mic's from the Players/Coaches Box.
mandoist06-11-2026 - Enough of her bullshit. Go marry someone.
mandoist06-11-2026 - Don't you just love this young lady!? We fans often expect athletes to be supermen and superwomen, often forgetting that they WILL GET TIRED! I love Alex's perspective. Tiredness for an athlete should never be viewed as a negative, especially if you are healthy, taking care of your body and mental health and putting in the work. What a mature perspective. Good for you, Alex!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Jess is absolutely correct! But the disrespect is a trait I have noticed in most of the Russian players. Mirra is good but very immature and lacks humility. Conceivable needs to get a handle on that!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth. It's a major sacrifice, among countless sacrifices, these athletes must make. People who blow-off that fact are ignorant and unfair when they blurt out, "They choose fame so they have to put up with the intrusions on their lives". No, they do not.
mandoist05-11-2026 - Okay... someone with a camera was EAVESDROPPING on a private conversation. Shouldn't that be the point of discussion here? Regardless of the sensationalist crap by media, Pegula (and anyone) has a right to an opinion. There used to be an expectation that private conversations were respected, regardless of 'stardom' and whatever other defensive excuses media tries to shove in our faces. Boo-hoo if feelings are hurt. BTW: Having been employed at various tourney venues, etc., I can't tell you how nasty and offensive players can be when discussing their opponents and colleagues... in "private". Well, I could, but won't. I also challenge anyone to deny what Jessica said is false.
mandoist05-11-2026 - Vacherot is Mongasque, rather than Swiss. The tournament was Swiss :DTrwd7702-11-2026
