WTA Rankings Update: Swiatek dethroned as Sabalenka and Gauff rise following US Open success

The WTA Ranking has been updated today, Monday, September 11, with Iga Swiatek losing her No. 1 spot to Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff on the rise after her US Open success.

After two weeks of intense battles and high stakes, the last Grand Slam of the year is over - and it has caused some big shake-ups in the rankings. First and foremost, Swiatek has been dethroned from her position as World No. 1 after holding the top spot for 75 weeks, the tenth-longest amount of time in history.

The 22-year-old finally fell to Sabalenka after months of being chased by the Belarusian. Coming into the US Open, the two players knew that the only way Swiatek would keep the top spot was if Sabalenka was eliminated before her. Therefore, if they were ousted at the same stage or her rival did better than her, the Polish player would lose the No. 1 ranking.

However, after Swiatek was ousted in the Round of 16 and Sabalenka progressed on to the final, the change was confirmed and the former has now officially dropped to No. 2. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old who finished as runner-up at Flushing Meadows starts today as World No. 1 for the first time in her career.

Gauff becomes top American

Meanwhile, Gauff's victory at the US Open, which is the 19-year-old's first Grand Slam title, sees her rise three places from sixth to enter the top 3. In doing so, she has usurped her compatriot and doubles partner Jessica Pegula, who drops to fifth after being ousted in the fourth round of the New York major. Nevertheless, the pair have regained the top spot in doubles together, as Gauff's rise now makes her the American No. 1.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Marketa Vondrousova has moved up from ninth to sixth after a run to the quarter-finals, while Ons Jabeur has dropped from fifth to seventh after a fourth-round defeat.

Semi-finalist Karolina Muchova has solidified her place in the top 10 by rising from tenth to eighth, while Maria Sakkari and Caroline Garcia, who were both eliminated in the first round of the American Slam, see themselves fall to ninth and tenth respectively. Elena Rybakina is the only non-mover, staying at No. 4.

Outside the top 10, Madison Keys has soared up six places to No. 11 after reaching the semi-finals, while Jelena Ostapenko, who ousted Swiatek at the US Open, has moved up five places to No. 16. At the same time, Victoria Azarenka has fallen out of the top 20 and now sits at No. 23 after her second-round defeat. Meanwhile, Karolina Pliskova and Danielle Collins have dropped out of the top 30 and top 40 respectively.
