Numerous big names have competed in the last-16 at the
Wuhan
Open, with some pivotal results in the WTA race having occurred.
Iga Swiatek,
Elina Svitolina and
Karolina Muchova were all desperate for wins to boost their
chances of appearing in Indian Wells in November.
Swiatek not at best, but finds a way to win
Swiatek was uncharacteristically edgy and frustrated on
court. On another day, it could have been another early exit for the six-time Grand
Slam champion in 2026. Nevertheless, Ashlyn Krueger would miss a golden opportunity
and fall to Swiatek 6-1, 6-4.
The scoreline may have hinted at a comfortable Swiatek win,
but the performance was not at the level she would have wanted. After a tight
first hold, the 25-year-old doubled her lead with the first break of the match.
Two games later, she sailed into a 4-0 lead while dropping just one point in
that time period.
Krueger had her first chance to break, but was unable to
take her chances. Swiatek saw it out on serve from that point, taking a huge step
towards a second consecutive quarter-final in Wuhan.
There were four holds of serve to commence the second set,
but it could have been 4-0 to the American. Four more break points came and
went as a wasteful Krueger rued her chances.
Swiatek would seize the initiative once more, but Krueger
broke straight back. It was a false horizon as Swiatek made it three breaks on
the spin to lead 4-3. Two games later, she would serve it out. A hugely crucial
result for her prospects of competing in the WTA Finals for the sixth
consecutive edition.
Iga Swiatek is the second highest ranked player left in the tournament
Muchova in danger as Svitolina rewarded for brilliant season
Swiatek is around
800 points behind her closest rival,
Muchova. If she wins the title, she can surpass her. That is due to the Czech
being dumped out in the last-16 of the final WTA 1000 tournament of 2026 in a
damaging 7-5, 6-3 loss to Diana Shnaider.
After the pair traded blows halfway through the first set,
both players missed more chances to blast themselves back ahead. Shnaider left
it late, and won the final three games in a set that took 74 minutes.
Muchova was on the back foot, and the Russian pounced. An
early break was backed up with a hold to love as she led 3-1. The Roland Garros
semi-finalist did not wait to see it out on her own serve, getting the job done
as Muchova nervously looks behind her.
That is not the case for Svitolina. Her comfortable 6-1, 6-4
triumph against Chinese wildcard Hanyu Guo has sealed her place in the WTA
Finals for the first time since 2019.
In her first appearance in Wuhan in seven years, it is consecutive
last-eight appearances for the Ukrainian. She stormed out to a 3-0 lead with a double-break,
but Guo managed to half the deficit. It was short-lived as Svitolina won the
final three games to take a healthy lead.
It was the home favourite who attempted a fight back in the second set, breaking twice. The problem is that Svitolina broke back on both occasions instantly. She won the final three games, breaking right at the end with a fourth match point.
Elina Svitolina will return to the WTA Finals
Kartal batters Paolini as Jovic and Fernandez out
British tennis has had a 2026 to forget, but there is a bright hope in the form of Sonay Kartal. An immense 6-2, 6-0 win over two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini confirms a second WTA 1000 quarter-final and moves within one win of a return to the top 100.
Following a long injury layoff, Kartal's form has been fantastic. After her Italian opponent broke the serve to lead 2-1, Kartal did not drop an entire game for the rest of the match. 11 consecutive games were won with the second set being won in 28 minutes. A statement made by Kartal, who will challenge Svitolina in the last-eight.
Iva Jovic still had an outside shot at qualifying for the WTA Finals, but it was very unrealistic. Her chances are now in the gutter with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Maja Chwalinska. The French Open finalist struck late in the first set after early breaks a piece. Jovic opened the first set with a hold, but Chwalinska then ran away with it. She won the remaining six games without conceding a break point to send the 18-year-old superstar tumbling out.
She will take on Maria Sakkari in the quarter-finals with the Greek getting the better of the Slovakian wildcard Mia Pohankova 6-1, 6-4. Taking just 83 minutes to prevail, it is her best WTA 1000 run since the semi-final in Qatar right at the start of the year.
After getting the better of Jessica Pegula, Jelena Ostapenko took down Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final showdown against Diana Shnaider. Following two one-sided sets, Ostapenko managed to edge a tense finale.
