At 22:00 CET the WTA US Open final between Fernandez and Raducanu will get underway. The first all-teenage final since 1999 will feature two players that we truly did not expect here. Emma Raducanu arrived in New York ranked 150 in the world and she had to go through qualifiers. She did so routinely winning three matches without dropping a set. She then won 6 matches in the main draw again without dropping a set to arrive in this final with a 9-match winning streak.
She played fabulous tennis all event long highlighted by perfect technique, excellent movement and unprecedented composure in key moments. The final part of her game is even more impressive considering how her Wimbledon run ended. Either way defeating Rogers, Bencic and Sakkari in consecutive rounds without dropping a set is a stunning thing considering the level these players showed her.
Her opponent Leylah Fernandez had an equally impressive run to the final if not more impressive. Fernandez has been enjoying somewhat of a breakout year albeit without consistent results. She won her maiden title in Monterrey this year but failed to live up to that result for the better part of the year. Now, in New York, she is playing her best tennis ever reaching the final. Her game is built around her no-fear attitude on the court never wavering from her playstyle.
A left capable of finding incredible angles on the court she rarely ever shies away from 'going for it' and so far it's been working. She's been battled-tested as well taking down Osaka, Kerber, Svitolina and Sabalenka in 3 sets outshining all of them in key moments. They played 3 years ago at the Junior Wimbledon and Raducanu was able to win that match but this one will largely come down to who decides to win the match. Both are capable and for both, it's a monumental moment in their careers. The match starts at 22:00 CET.
