Ruud played in Seoul the week before and he'll make the short trip to Japan to compete at this event. It's an ATP 500 event that drew a packed field of players albeit one that pales compared to the one playing in Astana the same week. The defending champion is Djokovic but he opted to play Astana instead.
Ruud will kick off against Jaume Munar with Martinez or Popyrin waiting in round two. The second seed is Cameron Norrie and he will face Thanasi Kokkinakis with Nakashima possibly waiting in round two. Frances Tiafoe is also playing and he'll take on Yasutaka Uchiyama in round one.
Nick Kyrgios will also make his return to tennis after spending some time back home in Australia and he'll take on Chun-Hsin Tseng in round one. If he wins that one he'll face either a qualifier or Majchrzak. Another interesting round one matchup is between Kecmanvoic and Nishioka with the Japanese player playing superb tennis this year.
