The 2020 Rio Open tournament might be over for 16-year old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, but his journey is just beginning.

Alcaraz shocked the tennis community by defeating seventh-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the opening round of his debut ATP tournament. The Spanish wildcard was unable to replicate that performance on Wednesday night when he faced qualifier Federico Coria. The Argentine prevailed 6-4 4-6 6-4 in a match that lasted over two hours.
Perhaps nerves and inexperience played a role in the outcome, as the teenager could only convert 4 of 14 break points. Furthermore, he won just 39% of points on his second serve, committing four double faults in the process.
Coria displayed great mental fortitude to survive this encounter, as the crowd was fully in support of the 16-year old. He next faces third-seeded Cristian Garin, who swept past Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 37 minutes.
After winning the title in Cordoba two weeks ago, the Chilean has acquired a six-match winning streak and will look to continue his strong form when he faces Coria in the quarterfinals.
Hungarian Attila Balazs broke Brazilian hearts when he rallied from a set down to overcome home favorite Thiago Monteiro 1-6 6-1 6-4. The World No.106 meets Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez, who defeated compatriot Pablo Andujar 6-1 6-4 to reach his first ATP Tour-level quarterfinal.
