Alex de Minaur has become a surprise last-minute addition to the Australian Davis Cup team, strengthening their quarter-final hopes against the United States in Malaga.
Initially, the world number nine was not part of the Aussie team, but after a "special" practice session with Rafa Nadal, he declared his availability to compete.
After an arduous season marred by a hip injury, the Australian was expected to be absent after losing all three of his matches at the ATP Finals in Turin last week, but he has put in the work.
"I'm very happy to be back here. Obviously it's been a tough year with injuries, but I feel much better and fit enough to compete," said de Minaur. "If my body responded well, I was always going to be willing to put my hand up and come and play for Australia."
"It was a special moment for sure," de Minaur said. "I've been lucky enough to share the court with Rafa a couple of times, but this time was even more special, being potentially his last dance. So it was good to have one last practice with him."
We are going to live tomorrow what is undoubtedly one of the star playoffs of the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup 2024 at the Martin Carpena in Malaga. The fact that Australia will have its number 1 in condition to play increases and more with a player of Spanish origin who feels very comfortable in Andalusia:
"It's always great to come back here to Malaga. We've had a good connection with the public over the years. Even though it's an away series for us, I'll try to earn the support of the Spanish fans, as I have roots here."
Captain Lleyton Hewitt expressed confidence in the team, highlighting their ability to overcome challenges: "We've had tough matches in recent years here and we've found a way to get to the final. We'll have to do it again on Thursday."
