Alexander Zverev was forced to save a match point against Sebastian Baez but he was able to do it and won the 5-set thriller 2-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 7-5.
It was a superb match that lasted almost four hours between Alexander Zverev and Sebastian Baez. The German player opened the match in a very bad fashion making many mistakes while allowing his opponent to play himself into a great rhythm. Baez won the opening one with 6-2 and was up 4-0 in the 2nd set when Zverev finally started showing signs of life.
He pulled back on the break but failed to complete the comeback in the 2nd set as Baez held it 6-4. The resurgence somewhat gave Zverev confidence and he came out strong in the 3rd one taking an early break and never looking back. He won it 6-1 to give Baez some doubt. It proved crucial as Zverev was able to dominate in the 4th set as well taking it 6-2.
The final set was a superb one where both players demonstrated a very high level. Both had chances but both were able to keep the other player away from any break points early. Baez broke first for the 4-2 lead but allowed Zverev to come back into the match in the next game. From there it was a heated battle with many great rallies.
At 5-4, Baez had a match point but Zverev saved it. He then broke the Argentinian for the 6-5 lead and finished it off with 7-5. A lot of complications but a stunning win for Zverev at the French Open.
