Novak Djokovic had to play at a very high level to down Alex Molcan at Roland Garros and he passed the test winning 6-2 6-3 7-6(4).
Djokovic did not simply face Alex Molcan as the Slovakian had Marian Vajda in his box, his current coach. Vajda has been the longtime coach of Djokovic leading him to many of his greatest career moments. Djokovic admitted before the match that he was not looking forward to it and to a degree it was visible. Novak had no issues in the first set as he opened very well.
He dropped only one point on his own serve in the first set which he won 6-2. Molcan is known to slow start at times and he certainly did. He committed more errors than he had winners (8-5) in the first set and that was not good enough. He upped his level in the 2nd set playing more aggressively but once again he did not play as well as he needed to.
Djokovic eased to a 6-3 finish in that set as well expecting a similar story in set number three. He was completely wrong despite jumping out to an early lead with a break. Molcan did not fold and he broke back immediately applying heavy pressure for Djokovic whose level dropped of a bit. Novak was able to survive and not lose his serve forcing a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, he produced a sensationally high-level serving really well. He outplayed Molcan and finished it off with 7-4. Good win for Djokovic as he moves to the French Open round three.
