There has been an upset on the opening day of the
Japan Open with
Alexander Zverev being dumped out at the opening hurdle by Jordan Thompson.
It was a 6-3, 6-4 win for Thompson with it being very much the game of missed opportunities for the German.
He had three break point chances in the opening game, but couldn’t seal any of them and Thompson then used his in game four and it also handed the Aussie the set later on after a game point remained unused.
Zverev led 2-0 in the second set, but the momentum was soon reversed as Thompson broke back. He then broke again in the ninth and held serve for victory.
Technically now, this is a blow for Zverev as he looks for ATP Finals qualification and also was a third consecutive first round exit after Beijing and Shanghai. Back to the drawing board.
