In mid-February, it was confirmed that Jannik Sinner would be banned from tennis from February 9th until May 4th, 2025. However, WADA acknowledged that the Italian player had not deliberately cheated. Fast forward a month, and Sinner remains at the top of the ATP Rankings, while men's tennis is in a state of flux.

Instead of capitalizing on Sinner’s absence, the top players have failed to take advantage. Only Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic remain in the Miami Open draw. Both struggled at Indian Wells, and Zverev, despite competing in Acapulco, Buenos Aires, and Rio, barely managed a win. Argentine players, particularly Sebastian Baez, dominated him.

This situation mirrors Carlos Alcaraz’s missed opportunity in 2023. Had Alcaraz performed well during the Asian swing, he could have become World No. 1. Instead, he faltered, highlighting Sinner’s significant lead over the rest of the field. Now, Djokovic has taken a leadership role by default in Miami. All four semi-finalists from Indian Wells—Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Jack Draper included—were eliminated early.

This trend isn’t unique to men's tennis. The women’s draw at the Miami Open also saw players struggling due to a packed schedule. Mirra Andreeva, for example, started strong but fell to Amanda Anisimova, showing signs of fatigue after competing extensively in the Middle East and the U.S. Unlike these players, Sinner will return fully rested, with his World No. 1 ranking intact.

Despite his ban, Sinner remains in a strong position. He will return fresh for back-to-back Grand Slams—Roland Garros and Wimbledon—followed by the US Open. Although he was the defending champion at the Miami Open, he can stay sharp through training while securing endorsement deals. His recent appearances at Fashion Week suggest he is making the most of his time off, though his court time is limited due to the ban.

The ATP top 10 lacks standout performers who can dominate consistently, unlike the WTA, where Aryna Sabalenka faces strong challengers from multiple players ranked between 2nd and 15th. Alcaraz has won multiple Grand Slams but remains vulnerable on certain surfaces. Taylor Fritz, like Zverev and Djokovic, remains in contention in Miami, but his ranking depends heavily on his US Open run. Meanwhile, Casper Ruud will likely shine during the clay season but faces the pressure of defending crucial ranking points at Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.

Jack Draper is another rising star, but he now faces new expectations. Previously, Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter carried British hopes, but Draper’s recent success has made him the new face of British tennis. His challenge is staying healthy and handling the pressure, especially at Wimbledon, where he struggled against Cameron Norrie in the past.

Elsewhere, Stefanos Tsitsipas has Monte-Carlo to defend, though his recent Dubai title provides some cushion. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev is set to drop out of the top 10.

Looking at the Miami Open's Last 16 and quarter-final lineup reveals a concerning picture for men’s tennis. The sport has struggled to find consistency beyond its biggest stars, and while new names like Draper, Arthur Fils, and Ben Shelton are emerging, the ATP needs a stronger pipeline of talent. The Big Four era left a void, and men's tennis now finds itself in a transition phase.

In the WTA, players like Maria Sakkari and Anett Kontaveit once occupied top spots but have since faded or retired. Now, Mirra Andreeva is among those rising to challenge the elite. Men's tennis, by contrast, lacks this level of competition and excitement. The question remains: Who will step up? Could it be Joao Fonseca? Perhaps, but things may get worse before they get better. Sinner’s absence has left a void, but so far, no one has seized the opportunity to fill it.
