Retired tennis pro Andy Roddick believes Iga Swiatek deserves to be the new World No.1, as the Polish star has been heads and shoulders above everyone else in recent weeks.
Swiatek lifted her first title of the season in Doha, where she dropped just one set en route to winning the title. She then put up a strong performance at Indian Wells to collect back-to-back WTA titles. The World No.2 is now through to the Miami semifinals, acquiring a 15-match winning streak in the process. The 20-year old will replace Ashleigh Barty at No.1 when the WTA rankings list gets updated next Monday.
"I think Swiatek has been head and shoulders above everyone else. We can't delete the last year of tennis, you know, you are what your ranking says you are and Osaka is not in the top 70 right now, Swiatek is No.1 in the world," said Roddick on Tennis Channel. "She is playing so well, I am watching her match, and any point she loses, she is instantly disappointed and it's not in an arrogant way, it's just that her expectation level is so high."
The 2003 US Open champion praised Swiatek's style of play, and believes the Polish star has developed a lot over a short period of time.
"She's not making random errors and she's making the rest of the players look dumb because she just says 'Hey, I'm gonna be a bit more aggressive' and it's almost like she spoke it into existence," added Roddick. "That is normally an adjustment that takes time, she's doing it right away and doing it incredibly well."
Swiatek is set to face American Jessica Pegula in the semifinals in Miami, in her bid to win consecutive WTA 1000 trophies.
