Andrey Rublev managed to navigate a tricky matchup with
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Dubai beating the Spaniard in three sets 1-6 7-6(7) 7-6(3).
It didn't start too well for Rublev and that's hardly a surprise anymore. The Russian has been having slow starts for a few weeks now as his tennis looks shakier than most days. He lost the opening set to a very inspired Davidovich Fokina 1-6 but rebounded well in the match. The second set saw Rublev increase his level, especially with his serve and that was enough to keep the Spaniard away from any break points.
We didn't see any in the second set as Fokina responded with a pretty high level as well. The tiebreak saw Rublev fall behind 0-4 in it as Fokina looked inches away from winning it. It looked even more likely when he expanded that lead to a 6-1 lead but then Rublev saved 5 match points in a row to make it 6-6.
He then won two more points to close it out 8-6 and complete a streak of 7 points in a row. The final set was another close one as neither player gave much. Fokina didn't collapse easily in the final set despite the huge missed opportunity but he had to save two break points on the way to the tiebreak. Rublev was as sure as ever and this time around he took the 6-1 lead in the tiebreak.
He didn't let it slip as he would finish it off and secure the quarter-final.
