Coach of Serena Williams Patrick Mouratoglou hails Andy Murray as an incredible champion and incredibly courageous.
French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou became prominent after he started working with Serena Williams amongst many other tennis players. His Academy became known around the world helping players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Coco Gauff and Linda Fruhvirtova carve out professional careers.
Asked about Andy Murray and his insistence to come back from several surgeries and injuries to tennis he said:
"I think he's incredibly courageous to be honest because he's had a lot of setbacks with his body and he's still here. He shows how much courage he has, which we knew already, but also how much he loves the game."
It has been a hard journey for Murray who endured several setbacks during his recovery process including a bout with COVID this year which barred him from competing in the Australian summer swing. On the unfortunate sequence of events for Murray, Mouratoglou said:
"Every time he feels 'wow, finally, I can start playing' then he has bad news about his physicality which stops him. If he continues to stop and start all the time, it's very difficult because he makes progress and his fitness starts to be at a level. He needs competition."
Asked if he believed Murray could become a top player again he responded positively:
"I think he can. I think he wants to. I think he's an incredible champion, but I also think that his body is really tough on him.
Murray pulled out of the Roland Garros after experiencing discomfort deciding to focus on the grass-court swing instead.
