Andy Murray is in the quarterfinals of the Hall of Fame Open after beating Wimbledon doubles champion Max Purcell in three sets 4-6 6-2 6-1.
The British player had a smashing start in Newport in round one taking down Sam Querrey 6-2 6-0. This time around things were a bit trickier but he was still able to muster up enough tennis skill to come back and win the match in three sets. For a while, it looked quite bleak for Murray who played a rather shaky set to start the match.
He had multiple break points early to go up 2-0 but failed to seize them. He then fell behind 1-5 as his game completely fell apart only to crawl all the way back to 5-4. Purcell had 40-0 on his serve to finish off the opening one but Murray fought back and created two break points but used neither. After dropping the opening set 4-6 he lost his serve early in the 2nd as well.
Purcell looked in control with 2-0 but Murray fought back brilliantly to make it 4-2. He then finished it off 6-2 after some brilliant returning. He also served much better in this one which made things a lot simpler in his own serve. The final set, however, was anything but simple as Murray took an early break, then lost it, but then took it again.
He was up 4-1 and from there he added another break finishing it off with 6-1. Purcell took a MTO in the final set clearly struggling with something. A hard-fought win for Murray but another quarterfinal on the grass with a chance to maybe even win this trophy.
