Former World No.1
Andy Murray has been added to the main draw of this year's
US Open, a decision made by the tournament organizers after 2016 champion
Stan Wawrinka withdrew from the event.
Having won his maiden Major title at Flushing Meadows in 2012, Murray will be competing in his second Grand Slam of the season after losing to Canadian
Denis Shapovalov in the third round at
Wimbledon.
Having undergone numerous hip surgeries since 2018, Murray at one point considered retirement. However, the Brit continues to grind it out, as he aims to bid goodbye to the sport on his terms.
Wawrinka, who defeated
Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final, has been dealing with injuries all season and withdrew from the US Open in order to recover from a recent foot surgery.
The US Open will be held in New York, and runs from August 30-September 12 2021.
