Andy Murray dropped his serve in the opening game of the match but rallied in strong fashion to down
Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-3 6-3.
Murray has been upping his game over the past few weeks and it almost culminated with a win over Norrie. It should have been but cramping proved the issue one more time. In his first
US Open match, Murray was able to overcome a shaky first game and the heat to down a pretty dangerous player in Cerundolo.
The Argentine took the early break but fell off a cliff after that spraying errors on both sides of the ball. He fell behind 2-5 but was able to battle back after Murray complicated things. Eventually, the Brit was able to bait Cerundolo into more mistakes as he escaped with the first 7-5. He had 18 unforced errors in the first set.
The 2nd set was a bit simpler for Murray as Cerundolo continue to spray errors with Murray patiently waiting. It was a very savvy plan from the Brit and it was executed to perfection. He took a 5-0 lead but dropped his serve once to give one break back. He won the set in his next try 6-3. The final set was another one where the Argentine disappointed.
It was just an off day that was not getting better no matter what he tried. He was poor from start to finish and his stats back it up. Only 26 winners and 47 unforced errors.
