Losing to Tatjana Maria at Wimbledon who went on to lose to eventual finalist, Ons Jabeur - it was revenge this time for Maria Sakkari who bagelled the German in a deciding set to begin her US Open campaign.
It was a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 success for the Greek who is number three seed at Flushing Meadows and aiming to revitalise the success she had last year where she reached the semi-finals losing to Emma Raducanu in a Grand Slam some feel got away from her.
It was anything but plain sailing though especially to start the tie as she went 4-1 down to Maria and looked to be in early trouble once again against the German.
But Sakkari rallied from there finding her first break of the set at 4-3 breezing through to get back into it but pivotally it was to turn it around at 5-4 up that held the key as Maria survived three break points before Sakkari finally sealed it on advantage.
It was the same story to end the set as Sakkari went 40-0 down and it looked like she was going to be broken back but held her nerve to serve it out at Advantage once more to lead.
But after losing her serve at 2-0 up and having issues with double faults, Sakkari fell to a 6-3 set loss and was sent all the way with Maria sweeping her final service game to claim it.
This though aided a final resolve for Sakkari who swept Maria's serve to break and go 2-0 up and eased to victory from there claiming a 4-0 double break after Maria had survived three break points before sealing it with a bagel. Crisis averted for the Greek.
