As Carlos Alcaraz took down Roberto Carballes Baena to reach the third round at the 2024 Miami Open, one of his biggest supporters during the tie was a certain former World No.1 in Andy Murray who tweeted his delight at watching the Spaniard play.
Murray tweeted saying: "Watching Alcaraz play tennis makes me smile." He was thanked by Alcaraz in a tweet after his win as he set up a clash with Gael Monfils in a real generation game type clash. But he was told about the comments in post match press and called them 'crazy' and that it is 'pretty cool' for him that a legend thinks so highly of him.
“Well, it's great. As I say many times, I play for myself, I play for my team. But also I enjoy if the people enjoy watching my matches, my games," said Alcaraz. "For me, it's pretty cool. I think for me it's even better if a legend like Andy says something like this, that he enjoys watching my matches a lot. It's crazy for me, honestly. I think he has seen a lot of tennis during his career, a lot of matches, a lot of players. To see these words from him for me is great. It's something I try to do in every match.”
“It wasn’t easy, because of the result it may seem that way, but I had to adapt to the conditions, which were very hard for me physically,” he continued on the match itself.
“The humidity is something that is difficult to deal with. I am very happy with my performance, with the way I hit the ball, with how I adapted my game to those conditions because the ball goes in a different way than Indian Wells. I had to see how and I did it very well.”
