Carlos
Alcaraz (No. 2) swept aside his compatriot
Roberto Carballes Baena (No. 64) by 6-2, 6-1 in
the
Miami Open debut and continues his streak after winning the Indian Wells
title. The 2-time Grand Slam champion is the top favorite of the tournament and
had a spectacular performance to confirm his great present.
The Spanish
duel was largely one-sided for much of the match. Alcaraz secured an early
break and took a 2-0 lead within a few minutes of play. The difference in level
between the two became evident throughout the set, with Alcaraz claiming a
second break in the fifth game and then comfortably holding his serve to close
out the set 6-2.
The
20-year-old player didn't give his opponent any chances and was aggressive with
8 winners and seven unforced errors, compared to Carballes' 11 unforced errors
and no winners. Alcaraz sought short points and approached the net persistently
with good results (13/15 points).
Without
exerting too much effort, Alcaraz once again started the second set with a
break and took a 2-0 lead. At that point, Carballes produced his best tennis,
resisting and forcing more extended rallies, but simply couldn't match the
level of the world No. 2.
In the
fifth game, Carballes fought to hold his serve, but after 12 minutes, Alcaraz
secured the second break of the set, practically sealing the outcome of the
match. Without faltering on his serve,
Carlos Alcaraz takes one more break and closed out the match 6-2,
6-1 and advanced to the third round of the Miami Open.
His next
challenge will be against the winner of the match between the 33rd seed Jordan
Thompson and the veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils.
