Andy Murray returned to the ATP Tour with a win over Australian Christopher O'Connell who played okay but proved not a match for Murray 6-4 6-3.
Murray is playing his 2nd grass event this year after playing in Surbiton last week. Murray lost in the semifinal against Denis Kudla but it was a good starting event for Murray who looked a bit sharper in this matchup. It started off badly for him as O'Connell took an early break thanks to some poor choices by Murray.
The Brit knew how to counter his opponent after that because the Australian has quite a limited repertoire when it comes to tennis. It was 0-3 but then Murray turned it around by winning 5 games in a row thanks to some good shot-making as well as solid serving. He finished off the set with 6-4 behind 5 aces.
Murray also only dropped 3 points on his first serve while attacking the Australian on his 2nd. He was quite impressive in the 2nd set as well. He did not serve that well but he was still able to take an early break and hold it to finish it off with 6-3.
He did not drop a single first serve points and keeping that percentage very high will be crucial for him. 39 % today in the 2nd set was very poor and he can and must do better moving forward.
