Despite calls for
Andy Murray to retire and him retorting about supposedly tarnishing his own legacy, the tournament director of
Open 13 Provence Jean-Francois Caujolle has said ahead of welcoming the World No.1 to the ATP 250 next week that he is a bigger name in his mind to have at a tournament than a top 20 player like Alex de Minaur.
Murray will be part of the field between February 5-11 which received the blow this week that Jannik Sinner would not be in the field. They since received backlash about how they announced it and also aiming for Alexander Zverev as his replacement. But in the opinion of Caujolle even Berrettini and Shapovalov outrank those higher up and used De Minaur who is the World No.11 as an example.
He said that Murray on one hand in comparison is player that is put in prime-time as the 36-year-old gets set to play next week at the tournament with Caujolle speaking to French publication, La Provence.
“Andy Murray, like Matteo Berrettini and even Denis Shapovalov, these are names. They have a quality of play, a presence. Having Murray is nice, it’s great,” the Frenchman said.
"Murray is worth more than a 15th or 20th in the world that the general public doesn’t know. Between Murray and Alex De Minaur, I prefer to have Murray. He’s a guy you put on prime time.”
