France has a new tennis star and his name is Arthur Fils as the French player took down a really strong Francisco Cerundolo to lift his maiden trophy.
Fils showed himself as a promising young player last year by qualifying for the Paris Masters and he followed that up with some solid performances this year. Clay isn't his best surface but he did play the junior Roland Garros final so his run here isn't a huge surprise. He showed a few weeks ago in Aix that he can beat good players on the surface and he did that in this final.
Cerundolo is a really strong player who has been playing well for a few weeks now but today he wasn't able to generate enough to beat Fils who was flying around the court in front of his fans.

Set 1

The first set was crucial in many ways as Fils did show some nerves early in the match. Despite that, he was able to hold his serve comfortably thanks to the somewhat faster condition we generally see in Lyon. Cerundolo help up pretty well but he made a few mistakes midway through and ultimately lost his serve giving Fils everything he needs to win the set 6-3.

Set 2

The second set was pretty competitive from both sides and a proper roller coaster. Both players struggled with their serve but Cerundolo particularly couldn't keep it in committing five double faults. He would end up losing his serve three times while Fils lost his only twice which was enough to win the set 7-5.
A very impressive and resilient showing from the 18-year-old who lifted his maiden trophy and is looking at a pretty big jump on the ATP Rankings as well. All of that leading up to Roland Garros next week. Pretty good timing.
