It was a highly emotional affair on Thursday when Frenchman Arthur Fils faced off against Alexander Zverev at the 2024 Paris Masters, with Fils getting into a tense verbal altercation with the umpire.
Both men were battling for a spot in the quarterfinals, with Zverev taking the first set. However, Fils rallied the support of his home crowd to win the second set, leading to what turned out to be a highly-charged final set showdown.
During the third set, Zverev was up 2-1 with Fils on serve. The Frenchman hit a serve close to the baseline, which was called out by the umpire. However, Fils challenged the call and was proven right, leading to it being overturned.
“You’re right. I missed it,” said the umpire when Fils approached him at the net.
However, the 20-year-old was in disbelief, responding with "How can you miss it?"
Fils would go on to win the point, but Zverev ultimately broke his serve. This led to Fils showing his frustration during the subsequent game, pausing to loudly reprimand the umpire during breaks between the points.
"You are so bad, it's unbelievable, since the first game I told you, you were so bad," said the Frenchman. "And you keep going like this. Man, come on. Rise up a little bit."
Zverev would eventually close out the game in three sets, getting some form of revenge after the German lost to Fils at the Hamburg Open in front of his home crowd.
