Jannik Sinner and
Carlos Alcaraz played a few times already and Jannik's coach was able to see the Spaniard play up close and he was stunned by his level.
Sinner beat Alcaraz once in a final but the Spaniard beat him more times than the Italian beat him and Vagnozzi spent hours trying to dissect the game of the Spaniard to better prepare Sinner for the match. It was a tough thing to do because Alcaraz has no real weaknesses. It's something that many have noted about him but Vagnozzi believes he's actually the best we've seen at this age:
"Well, we’re talking about a phenomenon. At 19 years
old, nobody played like that, not even the all-time greats, such as
Djokovic, Rafa or Federer. No one was as complete as he is when they
were 19 years old. He is surely going to improve, and be at the top for
many, many years."
It's not something new either because Vagnozzi saw the same things in a 15-year old Alcaraz too:
"If you watch a match of Alcaraz when he was 15 years
old you see that he could do more or less all the things he does even
now: he plays dropshots, he comes to the net, he does serve and volley;
it’s a path he is been completing over time."
Alcaraz and Sinner last played last week in Indian Wells where the Spaniard once again defeated Sinner. Their rivalry is starting to blossom after several impressive matches they played.
