The Estoril Open main draw gets underway this Monday, April 1, and runs until next Sunday, April 7. The qualifying tournament is taking place this weekend, but the draw for the main draw has already been made, with Nuno Borges, João Fonseca, Casper Ruud (the 2023 champion), Hubert Hurkacz and João Sousa (who is going to his farewell tournament) knowing their fate.
The top four seeds, namely Ruud, Hurkacz, Lorenzo Musetti and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, receive a bye to the second round. João Fonseca and Nuno Borges will face a qualifier, as will Dominik Koepfer, who arrives after a good campaign at the Miami Open;
One of the matches that marks this first round is that between Henrique Rocha and Gaël Monfils. The Frenchman arrives at the Estoril Tennis Club as the 7th seed and is the favorite to advance to the next round, but he faces Henrique Rocha, one of the most promising players in Portuguese tennis. At the age of 19, Rocha became the 2nd youngest player ever to win an ATP Challenger Tour tournament. Rocha won the Murcia Challenger last week.
Another highly anticipated match could be the last in the career of João Sousa, the best Portuguese tennis player of all time. And his opponents won't be easy, as the player from Guimarães will be up against the young sensation, Arthur Fils, world number 37, 19 years old, who has already won this year against players like Nuno Borges and Davidovich Fokina. The Frenchman is a real contender for final victory at the Estoril Open.
Also noteworthy is Miomir Kecmanovic, runner-up in the 2023 edition, who will face veteran Roberto Bautista Agut. The Serb is the clear favorite, but the Spaniard, who rounds off the world's top 100, shouldn't be overlooked. Dominik Thiem arrives in Cascais with the cloud of retirement hanging over him. The Austrian wants to kick-start the crisis and will face Maximilian Marterer, world number 102 who has never beaten Thiem.
Other matches such as the one between Daniel Altmaier and Pedro Martinez and Pedro Cachin and Marton Fucsovics also promise to be interesting.
