The 2025
US Open tournament had little time to celebrate it's accomplishment of offering the richest prize money in tennis history, as organizers of the Nitto
ATP Finals announced they would be shattering that record.
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz won this summer's US Open, defeating World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the final. The reigning Roland Garros champion walked away with $5 million in prize money, the most ever at an ATP event.
The ATP Finals is a year-ending tournament that features the eight best players based on ATP Rankings competing for the final crown of the season. Competitors will battle in a round-robin style group stage, before advancing to the knockout stages where they will involve the semifinals and ultimately the final.
Should a player go undefeated throughout the ATP Masters event and win the tournament, he will walk away with $5,071,000. This precise number ensures the season-ending elite event sits at the top of the list as the highest prize money won in tennis history.
Sinner went undefeated at the 2024 edition
World No.1 Jannik Sinner was a man on a mission at last year's event, which took place in Turin. Empowered by the home crowd, Sinner was 5-0 at the tournament, and became the second man to win the ATP Finals in the round robin era without dropping a set. Tennis great Ivan-Lendl first achieved this feat in 1986.
As compared to the 2024 edition, there will be no changes in the round-robin stage. However, the semifinal winners will receive $1,183,500. Furthermore, the eventual champion will pocket $2,367,000 in addition to earlier earning.
Sinner took home $4,881,100 at last year's event, the then-largest prize money at an ATP event. The Italian defeated American Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win his eight title of 2024.
The World No.1 and Alcaraz have qualified for this year's ATP Finals. Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Fritz are likely to join them in the upcoming weeks as the season comes to an end.
