Felix Auger-Aliassime has seen his hopes of qualifying for the year end ATP Finals be severely dented as he retired suddenly at Swiss Indoors in Basel after losing the first set.
Auger-Aliassime was trailing 3-6 when he walked to the net and ended proceedings after just 45 minutes in the ATP 500 tournament. While at first it looked somewhat bizarre, he looked to have tweaked his lower back as he spent time stretching it out throughout the Quarter-Final.
This was made all stranger by the fact that he lifted the trophy in Brussels last week to move to ninth in the ATP Race. He is 340 points behind eighth placed Lorenzo Musetti who occupies the final Qualification spot. Musetti is in Quarter-Final action on Friday against Corentin Moutet.
Auger-Aliassime is hoping to make his second appearance in the event having competed in 2022 but it seems that time is running out and he will need a good run in Paris next week to achieve what he needs to.
While Alexander Zverev has already qualified. After a walk-over against Tallon Griekspoor he is through to the semi-finals and will as a result take his spot in Turin. Alex de Minaur also won early in Vienna seeing off Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 7-6.
Denis Shapovalov and Joao Fonseca are currently embroiled in a final set in Basel as of time of writing with Ruud and Sinner to come from Basel and Vienna respectively tonight.
