ATP Rankings Update | Jannik Sinner set to lose big tally of points as Fils ready to break new ground

The Asian swing has got underway on the ATP Tour, but the big boys will get their campaign properly underway in the China Open and Japan Open in the coming days. The ATP rankings will see some fascinating changes and already are with points coming off from this time last year.

Jannik Sinner’s spot as World No.1 is not under threat for the time being, but 500 points from his China Open title last year will not be defended with his knee injury still causing havoc.

Carlos Alcaraz will also defend a title, this time in Tokyo. He is fine in fifth with Ben Shelton not in action. Felix Auger-Aliassime follows in suit with Daniil Medvedev getting a head start in the Hangzhou Open. He is in the semi-finals of the event, with there the chance of getting within 30 points of the Canadian with a title triumph.

Just behind Flavio Cobolli and Frances Tiafoe, Arthur Fils is debuting in the top 10 in the world. This is thanks to Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz dropping down after last year’s points come off. For the American, it means a top 10 exit. Fils will be happy with this, but he will still need to try and qualify for the Japan Open after a logistical error.

Learner Tien has 320 points come off after his final run last time out. He is one of a number of top players who had competed in the Laver Cup in London and now have a quick turnaround to get to Asia. Casper Ruud represented team Europe but has more urgent issues to deal with after exiting the top 20 again.

Medvedev is not the only player competing. Andrey Rublev is also in the semi-finals in Hangzhou. A title can help him close the gap to the top 20. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is in the same position, but his top-20 return is a bit further off with a deep run in one of the bigger tournaments that is needed.

Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov are set to clash for a spot in the Chengdu final with a return to the top 20 for one of these players if they can get the right results.

Roman Safiulin and Kyrian Jacquet leap into the top 100. For the latter, it is for the first time, as he sits in a new career high of 86th in the world. Another Frenchman is going the other way, with Terence Atmane on the brink of leaving the top 100.
