Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis believes that Spain’s young
tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz is a mixture of Switzerland’s legendary player Roger
Federer and former world number one Rafael Nadal.
The 20-year-old is one of the hottest young properties in
the world of tennis, especially after winning the Wimbledon 2023 title following a
win against current world number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in a five-set
thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
Bagnis, while talking to ATP, heaped praise on Alcaraz who
according to him has a ‘killer’ look.
“I remember in Cordenons that I said his serve was not so
good. Right now I cannot say the same thing,” he said. “He [Carlos Alcaraz] has
so much talent. His speed and he plays amazing shots in all the court. I think
Carlos is a combination between Nadal and Federer, maybe.
“I think the key for him is the way that he competes on the
court. His attitude, it’s amazing. Every time he’s celebrating with his bench.
Every time he shows the best possible attitude. For me that is one of the best,
toughest things in tennis.
“That he can do it at only 19 years is amazing. Another part
is his tennis is magic, it’s amazing. But his attitude and mentality is so
strong, also. I think Carlos Alcaraz is most similar to a killer. You cannot
breathe. He’s attacking you all the time. He has so many shots and tricks.”
Despite that triumph in London in July earlier this year,
Alcaraz will be slightly disappointed with his performance at the recently
concluded US Open.
The current world number
two, who was defending his crown in New York this year, was knocked out in the
semifinal after losing to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev with a score of 7-6, 6-1,
3-6, 6-3.
