22-year-old Sebastian
Korda pulled off a shocking victory over the two-time
Australian Open finalist
Daniil Medvedev in just three sets to reach the fourth round.
The Russian was
affected by pain in his right arm that, as he later admitted, bothered him at
the time of his service.
In any case, he found himself
outmatched throughout the game by the American and
Andy Roddick heaped praise on him.
“He was on top of me all the time, and I
was trying to come back every set, trying to fight, trying to be there.”
After the match, Andy
Roddick used his Twitter to comment on the American’s performance: “Big win for
Seb Korda. Beating someone as good and as slam tested as Medvedev is massive.
Three out of five is a different animal, and he answered the call. Very
impressive against one of the toughest five set outs”
Korda has shown
consistent throughout the start of the season, losing only one match in 2023,
at the final in Adelaide against Novak Djokovic. For the first time in his career,
he reaches the second week of the first major of the year, and prepares to face
the Polish Hubert Hurkacz.
