Nick Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the
Australian Open due to a knee issue and Boris Becker called it a pity for the event and tennis in general.
Kyrgios was widely expected to be on the list of players capable of winning the event. He recently played a practice match against Djokovic but found himself with knee discomfort after the match. Upon consultation with his team and doctors, he was declared unfit to play at the event holding a press conference to explain the decision.
He also showed the reason for his withdrawal on Instagram and you can read all about that
here. Commenting on the withdrawal from Eurosport Germany, Becker said:
“It didn’t look that way on Friday night when he played two sets against Djokovic. He talked about injuries beforehand, but to the ankle and not to the knee."
He added:
“But what Kyrgios says and what he does are often two different
things. Nevertheless, it is of course very bitter to have to pull out of
your home Grand Slam before the first round due to an injury. It’s a
pity for all of us.”
