Ben Shelton opts out of wearing live microphone during doubles event at DC Open

American tennis star Ben Shelton is the latest high-profile player to decide against wearing a live microphone during his doubles matches at the DC Open, a new innovation being tried by the ATP this summer.

Doubles players are being asked to wear a microphone during their matches, in an attempt to give fans a glimpse at their mindset during games. The audio from these matches will be sent live to TV audiences, therefore, conversations between partners, strategies and tactics will be heard by everyone watching on television.

There appears to be a division among fans regarding this new project. While several seem to be in favor as it could bring a different type of entertainment to the sport, others are opposed as they believe it infringes on player privacy and limits their freedom to speak as they are aware they are on television.

World No.14 Ben Shelton falls in the latter group, as the tennis star was quick to opt out of participating. The American did not mince words when asked why he refuses to be mic'd up during his doubles matches.

“For me, I like my career,” Shelton said.

Perhaps Shelton is worried about accidently letting some colorful words slip during play, but the US Open semifinalist is adamant he will not be wearing a microphone during this trial project in Washington.
